English
At Adel Primary School our English curriculum is designed using the latest evidence-based guidance, including the EEF Improving Literacy Guidance Report (2021), the Ofsted English Research Review (2022), and the DfE Writing Framework (2025).
We aim to develop confident, articulate readers and writers by providing:
- A rich literary experience: Carefully selected, high-quality texts expose children to a breadth of literature, diverse language, and opportunities for meaningful discussion.
- Explicit teaching of writing strategies: Composition is taught through modelling and supported practice, following five key steps: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and presenting.
To ensure strong foundations in transcription skills, we use the following programs for:
- Handwriting: Taught from Reception to Year 6 using the Letter-Join programme.
- Spelling: Delivered through Little Wandle phonics in Early Years and Year 1, and Spelling Shed from Year 2 onwards.
To ensure strong foundations in reading fluency, we usethe following programmes:
- Reading: Taught using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised scheme, and the Little Wandle Fluency scheme.
Our approach ensures every child develops the skills and confidence to communicate effectively, fostering a lifelong love of reading and writing.
