On Tuesday 6th December, eight children from our choir performed at Leeds Town Hall as part of the Leeds Schools Music Association Christmas Concert. Over 400 children and young people were involved in the concert, which included Leeds Youth Orchestra, Leeds Flutes, Leeds Schools Choir, along with the Festival Choir. It was a magical evening and our children did us proud, creating the perfect start to Christmas.
Our choir also had the privilege of singing for a local community group. On Wednesday 7th December we sang for OPAL group at the Stables. The event was very much enjoyed by the old people and children alike. Our children sang beautifully and engaged in conversations with the audience in the true spirit of Christmas.
We also enjoyed a 'Carol Concert' to truly get us in the festive mood on the 8th December. All our children performed excellently and the audience was very appreciative. A big 'Well done' to all our children who took part ( over 50 from Years 4,5 and 6)
Music in the Curriculum:
Music is taught throughout the school as a discrete subject, by class teachers in FS / KS1 and by Miss Stride in KS2. The focus is fourfold, according to the National Curriculum: listening, appraising, composing and performing.
We also offer a range of instrumental tuition taught by peripatetic teachers: woodwind (Wednseday pm taught by Mrs Oliver), cello (Tues am taught by Mrs Smith), violin (Mon am taught by Mrs Thorpe), brass (Thurs a.m. taught by Mrs Eddison) and guitar (Wednesday 3p.m. - 4.p.m. taught by Mr Karvajevski) Lessons are avilable to children from Yr 4 upwards, with occasionally Yr 3 children eligible. Taster lessons in the instruments are offered in June, after which applications can be made.
All children in Year 3 are taught recorder by Miss Stride, on a Tuesday morning, when children will need to buy a recorder.
We will soon be announcing an exciting opportunity for children who have instrumental lessons to join a local cluster ensemble!
Many children are part of the school choir which rehearses on a Wednesday at 2.30 pm. Children from Years 4, 5 and 6 are eligible to join the choir. At present we have around 45 members. The choir performs at various public occasions and in-school celebrations.
The culmination of the musical year is the Adel Music Festival, which takes place in June. This is a showcase for all of our musicians and is usually very well received.
